Next Stop, Supreme Court?
It's likely that the next president will face at least one Supreme Court vacancy. Obama should promise Hillary Clinton, now, that if he wins in November, the vacancy will be hers, making her first on a list of one.
Obama and Clinton have wound up agreeing on nearly every major issue during the campaign; at the end of the day, they share many orthodoxies. Unless the Supreme Court were to get mired in minuscule details of what constitutes universal health care, Obama could assume that he'd be pleased with most Clinton votes, certainly on major issues such as abortion.

Congress Screw Public And Blames Oil Execs
Let's see. Did the oil companies prevent themselves from drilling on and around the North American continent? When did the oil companies decide to make it unprofitable and impossible to build new refineries? I can't remember when the oil companies created the regulatory nightmare that they work under, but maybe Leahy and Kohl can slip me a note on this. I hope they add a paragraph in their note that explains when the oil companies elected a bunch of pandering liberal numbnuts to Congress so they could have their business regulated and taxed almost out of existence. Maybe include a P.S. on boutique gas mixtures for hypocritical left coast progressives deluding themselves into believing their doing something for Mother Earth.

Political leaders in Washington gave big oil executives an earful Wednesday. Oil industry executives can expect another rough reception when they go before a House panel this morning.
They want to know what's caused the recent spike in oil and gas prices.
"You speak of this current upcycle. What a nice nice term, and I suppose we can tell our constituents when they find they cannot afford to go to work because of the price of gas, 'don't worry, you are in a current upcycle,'" Sen. Patrick Leahy said.
"Your industry has no problem in doubling your profits, tripling your profits. Even when prices at the pump go crazy, you have no problem in keeping up with your increasing profit," Sen. Herb Kohl said. "It doesn't seem fair, guys. It just doesn't seem fair."
No, it doesn't seem fair. Congress hamstrings business in general and the energy industry specifically and places the blame on them while screwing us. I believe that it is tradition, even when crude and oil are involved, that there should be some kissing first. Oh, and a desire to participate.
I'll be waiting by my mailbox for that note Pat and Herb. Might as well, I can't afford to drive anywhere because you people wouldn't know the working class from the politburo nor which one works and which one does not.

Sen. Barack Obama ripped into a Republican ad today that targets comments made by his wife, Michelle, and called the GOP tactic "low class" and "detestable."
The Illinois senator told "Good Morning America" that he expects hardball tactics from the Republicans if he becomes the Democratic presidential nominee.
"But I also think these folks should lay off my wife," he told "GMA" as his wife chuckled beside him.
So, Obama puts his wife out there to speak, as a strong independent woman, for the campaign to impress women and she says some really stupid thing which makes the Obama angry that people are taking what she say seriously so he says to lay off his wife because she, as an independent woman, is his wife and not part of the real campaign.
That should make women comfortable. At least it made Michelle chuckle. We'll always have that.

Pitching his message to Oregon's environmentally-conscious voters, Obama called on the United States to "lead by example" on global warming, and develop new technologies at home which could be exported to developing countries.
"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.
"That's not leadership. That's not going to happen," he added.
Obama wants to lead by following those he perceives as our betters throughout the world.

Democrats are rebuking President Bush for saying in his speech to the Knesset, here, that to “negotiate with terrorists and radicals” is “appeasement.” The Democrats took it as a slap at Barack Obama. What bothers me is the continual reference to Hitler and his National Socialists, particularly the British and French accommodation at the Munich Conference of 1938.
What Hitler was demanding was not unreasonable. He wanted the German-speaking areas of Europe under German authority. He had just annexed Austria, which was German-speaking, without bloodshed. There were two more small pieces of Germanic territory: the free city of Danzig and the Sudetenland, a border area of what is now the Czech Republic.
We live in an era when you do not change national borders for these sorts of reasons. But in 1938 it was different. Germany’s eastern and western borders had been redrawn 19 years before—and not to its benefit. In the democracies there was some sense of guilt with how Germany had been treated after World War I. Certainly there was a memory of the “Great War.” In 2008, we have entirely forgotten World War I, and how utterly unlike any conception of “The Good War” it was. When the British let Hitler have a slice of Czechoslovakia, they were following their historical wisdom: avoid war. War produces results far more horrible than you expected. War is a bad investment. It is not glorious. Don’t give anyone an excuse to start one.
BUT the Seattle Times editor realized he was defending Nazism to defend Obama so he changed what he said to include not just one of the worst butchers of all time, but really a German national claim of inclusion of all German speaking people as a basis for taking land that was not their's. Kind of like La Raza thinks the Southwestern portion of America plus Claifornia should revert to Mexico.

The narrative we're given about Munich is entirely in hindsight. We know what kind of man Hitler was, and that he started World War II in Europe. But in 1938 people knew a lot less. What Hitler was demanding at Munich was not unreasonable as a national claim (though he was making it in a last-minute, unreasonable way.) Germany's claim was that the areas of Europe that spoke German and thought of themselves as German be under German authority. In September 1938 the principal remaining area was the Sudetenland.
So the British and French let him have it. Their thought was: "Now you have your Greater Germany." They didn't want a war. They were not superpowers like the United States is now. They remembered the 1914-1918 war and how they almost lost it.
In a few months, in early 1939, Hitler ordered the invasion of what is now the Czech Republic—that is, territory that was not German. Then it was obvious that a deal with him was worthless--and the British and French did not appease Hitler any more. Thus the lesson of Munich: don't appease Hitlers.
But who else is a Hitler? If you paste that label on somebody it means they are cast out. You can't talk to them any more. And it has gotten pasted on quite a few national leaders over the years: Milosevic, Hussein, Ahmadinejad, et. al. In particular, to apply that label to the elected leaders of the Palestinians is to say that you aren't going to listen to their claims to a homeland. I think they do have a claim. So do the Israelis. In order to get anywhere, each side has to listen to the other. To continually bring up Hitler, the Nazis, the Munich Conference and “appeasement,” is to try to prolong the stalemate.
It is scary that Obama knows less about history than Bruce Ramsey which makes both of them unqualified to be president.

Who's To Blame For High Gas Prices?
Saudi oil output hike would not solve US problems: Bush
US President George W. Bush said on Saturday that a hike in oil output by Saudi Arabia would not solve American energy problems.
"It's not enough, it's something but it doesn't solve our problem," Bush told reporters in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Bush said he was "pleased" with a Saudi decision taken on May 10 to increase its oil production by 300,000 barrels per day in response to customers, but said that he was "also realistic" about what the Americans should do.
"Our problem in America gets solved when we aggressively go for domestic exploration. Our problem in America gets solved if we expand our refining capacity, promote nuclear energy and continue our strategy for the advancing of alternative energies as well as conservation," he said. "One interesting thing about American politics these days is those who are screaming the loudest for increased production from Saudi Arabia are the very same people who are fighting the fiercest against domestic exploration, against the development of nuclear power and against expanding refining capacity."
Even if Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China and Russia starting pumping like mad our gas prices would remain high and going higher. It's called price competition worldwide. It is also called stupid liberal policies that have griped our country like a virus for over 30 years of energy legislation.
Our fuel problems are a direct result of modern American liberalism as seen through the eyes of an out-of-touch Congress, radical environmentalists squealing "wolf", the main stream media and a populous whose biggest mistake was believing all this crap. That belief was and is costing jobs, homes and money and will take 6 - 10 years to repair.
If, as it is being reported, the Democrats make major gains in the upcoming elections, the 6 - 10 year guesstimate is out the window which means America will be financially subservient to other countries for decades to come.
Be careful what you wish for.

Police used tear gas and batons to disperse a demonstration organised by the national consumers' union to protest recent hikes in the prices of rice, oil and soap.
Authorities in Dakar said the demonstration had not been authorised. At least 24 people were arrested and many are still being detained, according to the Agence France Press. The Dakar-based African human rights coalition RADDHO (Rencontre Africaine pour la Défense des Droits de l’Homme) said in a statement on 30 March that it firmly condemns "unspeakable" acts by security forces which "violate" people's rights.
It likened alleged beatings with electric prods to "torture" and called for an investigation into "all acts of violence and poor treatment suffered by demonstrators".
Darfur force tainted by war crimes allegations

The deployment of an international peacekeeping force in Darfur was thrown into confusion yesterday by war crimes allegations against its proposed deputy commander.
The United Democratic Force-Inkingi, A Rwandan opposition group, accused Major General Karenzi Karake of responsibility for carrying out political assassinations and ordering reprisal killings against Hutus in Rwanda and Zaire in the years after the 1994 Rwandan genocide, when he was the country's chief of military intelligence.
I guess that is really unfair to the Toons.

She set out to get revenge for her daughter. Then went on to ridicule her victim and then suggest she kill her self and then cajole her, as a liar posing as a teen, to have greater impact to push her over the edge. She lied. She bullied. She was/is a bad person.
She is a murderer.
If she came after my daughter I'd hunt her like a bad habit.
She is not a protector. She is a person who should be convicted of murder.

No new refineries have been built in the US in the past 25 years. And petroleum industry experts say anyone would have to be crazy to launch such an effort -- even though present refineries are running at nearly 100 % of capacity and local gasoline shortages are beginning to crop up.
Why does the industry appear to have built its last refinery? Three reasons: Refineries are not particularly profitable, environmentalists fight planning and construction every step of the way and government red-tape makes the task all but impossible. The last refinery built in the US was in Garyville, Louisiana, and it started up in 1976. Energy proposed building a refinery near Portsmouth, Virginia, in the late 1970s, environmental groups and local residents fought the plan -- and it took almost nine years of battles in court and before federal and state regulators before the company cancelled the project in 1984.
Industry officials estimate the cost of building a new refinery at between $ 2 bn and $ 4 bn -- at a time the industry must devote close to $ 20 bn over the next decade to reducing the sulphur content in gasoline and other fuels -- and approval could mean having to collect up to 800 different permits. As if those hurdles weren't enough, the industry's long-term rate of return on capital is just 5 % -- less than could be realized by simply buying US Treasury bonds. "I'm sure that at some point in the last 20 years someone has considered building a new refinery," says James Halloran, an energy analyst with National City Corp. 12-06-01 US appears to have built its last refinery
No new refineries have been built in the US in the past 25 years. And petroleum industry experts say anyone would have to be crazy to launch such an effort -- even though present refineries are running at nearly 100 % of capacity and local gasoline shortages are beginning to crop up.
Why does the industry appear to have built its last refinery? Three reasons: Refineries are not particularly profitable, environmentalists fight planning and construction every step of the way and government red-tape makes the task all but impossible. The last refinery built in the US was in Garyville, Louisiana, and it started up in 1976. Energy proposed building a refinery near Portsmouth, Virginia, in the late 1970s, environmental groups and local residents fought the plan -- and it took almost nine years of battles in court and before federal and state regulators before the company cancelled the project in 1984.
Industry officials estimate the cost of building a new refinery at between $ 2 bn and $ 4 bn -- at a time the industry must devote close to $ 20 bn over the next decade to reducing the sulphur content in gasoline and other fuels -- and approval could mean having to collect up to 800 different permits. As if those hurdles weren't enough, the industry's long-term rate of return on capital is just 5 % -- less than could be realized by simply buying US Treasury bonds. "I'm sure that at some point in the last 20 years someone has considered building a new refinery," says James Halloran, an energy analyst with National City Corp. "But they quickly came to their senses," he adds.

The Place to Discuss Our Fundamental Principles

Spending some time on the campaign trail has confirmed a couple of thoughts I’ve had before I entered the Republican primary race.
First, conservatism is alive and well in America; don’t let anyone tell you differently. And by conservatism, I don’t mean the warmed-over “raise your hand if you believe …” kind of conservatism we see blooming every election cycle. No, I’m speaking of the conservatism grounded in principles based upon enduring truths: an understanding of the importance of human nature in the affairs of individuals and nations. Respect for the lessons of history, the importance of faith and tradition. The understanding that while man is prone to err, he is capable of great things when not subjugated by a too-powerful government. These are the principles that inspired our Founding Fathers, and resulted in a Constitution that delineated the powers of the central government, established checks and balances among the branches of government and further diffused governmental power by a system of Federalism.
Second, change – whether it “real change,” “bold change” or the “change we can believe in” variety others are selling – isn’t itself an innovative policy or a particularly strong leadership stance. In fact, from Burke to Buckley, there has been an acknowledgement that change in the political arena is inevitable and necessary, and we in the U.S. tend to experience it in regular, 2, 4 and 6 year intervals, so 2008 is hardly our first rodeo. The challenge for conservatives is calibrating whether the change being proposed is consistent with our principles and our philosophy, and whether that change is appropriate.
Our nation has some serious issues to work through for today … and for the next generation. Now isn’t the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues. For us conservatives it must be about principles and policies that are grounded in freedom, free markets and the rule of law. That’s what I’ve been talking and writing about for the past few years, and that’s what I want to talk write about here on Townhall and in the new Townhall Magazine.
I joined Townhall and am writing exclusive commentaries for Townhall Magazine because I see them elevating the discourse on issues based on these principles -- smaller government, individual liberty, standing for common values that have become all too uncommon, a strong national defense and, most of all, an optimism and belief in America.
I’m glad to be back here in familiar territory, and we’ll be talking to you soon.

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann apparently is trying to negotiate the terms of his resignation, offering to quit if legislative leaders kill a bill that would authorize Inspector General Thomas P. Charles to investigate the scandal in Dann's office.
Apparently not wanting to look like corrupt backroom dealers the Democrats are making backroom deals as they look to November 2008.
I think Dann is just the tip of the iceberg.

Ron Paul's forces quietly plot GOP convention revolt against McCain
Virtually all the nation's political attention in recent weeks has focused on the compelling state-by-state presidential nomination struggle between two Democrats and the potential for party-splitting strife over there.
But in the meantime, quietly, largely under the radar of most people, the forces of Rep. Ron Paul have been organizing across the country to stage an embarrassing public revolt against Sen. John McCain when Republicans gather for their national convention in Minnesota at the beginning of September.
Paul's presidential candidacy has been correctly dismissed all along in terms of winning the nomination. He was even excluded as irrelevant by Fox News from a nationally-televised GOP debate in New Hampshire.
But what's been largely overlooked is Paul's candidacy as a reflection of a powerful lingering dissatisfaction with the Arizona senator among the party's most conservative conservatives. As anticipated in late March in The Ticket, that situation could be exacerbated by today's expected announcement from former Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia for the Libertarian Party's presidential nod, a slot held by Paul in 1988.
They've had Ralph Nader. We've had Ross Perot cost us an election. It appears that now we have two men, Bob Barr & Ron Paul, I used to admire vying for the "Let's save America by screwing it" award.
We are yet to see just how many loons Barr can attract, but Paul has attracted buggy ones like a zapper on a hot humid evening. They are so buggy that they actually believe they are patriotic by helping Obama or Hillary win the White House. They are so buggy they believe their ideological purity forces them to throw our country to progressives because their "rightness" doesn't allow for any compromise.
They're also political babies that refuse to constructively work within the Republican party to change things as Reagan did. The little retards are miffed that none of the adults will listen to their swill so they're going to have a hissy fit to just show us all.
They're spoiled little brat traitors.

A good friend who wasn't aware that he diabetic almost went into a coma, but was brought back in time. He was asked by the attending doctor what day it was, what the year was and how many states there are in the United States. Groggily he answered the questions one by one ending with 49 states. The doctor asked him if he was sure to which he replied, "I've always had doubts about New Jersey."

Help is building houses in the 9th Ward in New Orleans where if there is a major storm, hurricane or flood again, all the house will be destroyed again, but Pitt is trying to help. I wish he'd stop. While Clinton veered between playing Queen Elizabeth I and Norma Rae, Obama and his team chugged along with a superior 50-state campaign strategy, racking up the delegates. If the candidate seemed weary and peevish or a little slow to respond at times, he never lost his cool. But the real test is yet to come. The Republican Party has been successfully scaring voters since 1968, when Richard Nixon built a Silent Majority out of lower- and middle-class folks frightened or disturbed by hippies and student radicals and blacks rioting in the inner cities. The 2008 race may turn on which party will win the lower- and middle-class whites in industrial and border states—the Democrats' base from the New Deal to the 1960s, but "Reagan Democrats" in most presidential elections since then. It is a sure bet that the GOP will try to paint Obama as "the other"—as a haughty black intellectual who has Muslim roots (Obama is a Christian) and hangs around with America-haters.
Obama says he's ready for the onslaught. "Yes, we know what's coming," he told a cheering crowd as he won the North Carolina primary last week. "We've seen it already … the attempts to play on our fears and exploit our differences to turn us against each other for pure political gain—to slice and dice this country into Red States and Blue States; blue-collar and white-collar; white, black, brown."
Okay, what do we have here? For openers Obama is a quiet, thoughtful team player who values good advice which is "A good formula for running a campaign—or a presidency." By contrast all others pale when compared to his obviously competent leadership.
Next the Republican Party has been scaring voters since Richard Nixon. A double-good punch with scare and Nixon in the same thought mixed in with lies about Obama's religion which lessens Wright's odious thoughts and words. Not bad even for Newsweek when truth becomes bad and when the truth is used it is a scare tactic.
It's a wrap with Obama triumphantly facing down the Republicans continued attempts "to play on our fears and exploit our differences to turn us against each other for pure political gain—to slice and dice this country into Red States and Blue States; blue-collar and white-collar; white, black, brown."

I really enjoy great campaigning especially when a campaign can seemingly pull everything together effortlessly, but when will Obama acknowledge this "in-kind" donation from their outside media consultants at Newsweek because this isn't reporting nor is it opinion. It's campaigning.
If the truth is bad then Newsweek should step up and admit it is bad to lie about those they want to defeat and it is bad to not be honest about their true role in this campaign.

Like most people in Mingo County, West Virginia, Leonard Simpson is a lifelong Democrat. But given a choice between Barack Obama and John McCain in November, the 67-year-old retired coalminer would vote Republican.
“I heard that Obama is a Muslim and his wife’s an atheist,” said Mr Simpson, drawing on a cigarette outside the fire station in Williamson, a coalmining town of 3,400 people surrounded by lush wooded hillsides.
For the MSM we'll list the confounding problems:
Mingo County - not confounding - filled with people too stupid to buy opera tickets
West Virginia - not confounding - filled with people too stupid to buy a New Yorker
Coalminers - confounding - they used to be reliable. Union members should know better that racism doesn't preclude unionism. Unionism precludes racism.
Muslims - not confounding - We're so dumb we think Obama is a Muslim which bolsters semi-rich intellectuals thinking that they're smarter than us little folks.
Atheist - not confounding - We're so smart we think Michelle Obama is an atheist which bolsters semi-rich intellectuals thinking that they're smarter.
Cigarette - not confounding - If you like tobacco you are too stupid to exist. Period.
Fire Station - confounding - Great image, but you might be conservative. Shut up and smile.

That he made this statement, and that it passed without comment by the journalists covering his speech indicates either breathtaking ignorance of history on the part of both, or deceit.

What would a nut caucus be worth if it didn't have Dennis Kuchinich? Well, it wouldn't be a real caucus without tin-foil man. Then there is Stephanie Tubbs-Jones who married anaxe murderer. Aw, sweet Marcy, she's just Kapturvating when she calls our founding fathers terrorists.
I love the Congressional Progressive Caucus. It is more entertaining that SNL at its worst.
Now the Iraq Veterans Against the War are taking their case toCongress the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC). This should be a show. A show of losers testifying before losers in a show of solidarity to lose the War On Terror. Of course, the CPC isn't a real committee. This is Conyers' fake hearing Part Deux only more so in a theatrical sense of the absurd.

Litigation Shame For Ohio

Frivolous lawsuits take valuable time and money from the citizens of Ohio. Unfair and onerous lawsuits, under the guise of the "little guy" vs evil corporations and mythical "pain and suffering" rulings, are costing Ohio jobs as well as valuable time and money. Judges that have the ethics and morals of a cathouse mouse write their names in their history books by rendering absurd and legally unsound decisions, at the expense of all Ohioans for their lawyer friends and their clients who receive the crumbs.
If Marc Dann and Rev Strickland want to play their little games fine by me as long as they do them on their on time and dime.
In 2006 Ohio was rated by the Institute for Legal Reform as 19th in litigation fairness.
In 2007 Ohio had sunk to 24th.
In 2008 Ohio sank further to 32nd.
It is my hope that the Rev and the perv will leave office and set up an ethics think tank.

One of my heroes, Bill Batchelder, is looking into the debacle called Marc Dann. When and if Bill Batchelder finds what he needs Dann will be looking into a new line of work because Batchelder loves the law and the state of Ohio.

Dann, a Democrat, admitted Friday to having an extramarital affair with a subordinate, and he fired or accepted resignations from four employees for their part in a sexual-harassment scandal. He apologized but refused to resign.
Gov. Ted Strickland and other Democratic leaders have said the House will try to impeach Dann if he doesn't step down.
Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering, asked Batchelder to guide the House on how to follow a process that hasn't been used in nearly 200 years.
''I have selected Rep. Batchelder for this task for several reasons, paramount among them because he is respected by members of both sides of the aisle on matters of great importance,'' Husted said.

Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."
"There's a pattern emerging here," she said.

Rich does an adequate job of minimizing the heart and the intellect of "conservative" evangelical preachers and those they endorse. Rich even has a theory of why Jeremiah Wright's video gets more play than Hagge's or Falwell's, it is Wright's histrionics and black-theater. Is Rich the reincarnation of Jimmy the Greek who portrays Wright and other black preachers as better and prettier because of their blackness and history of slavery? Probably. It is the type of cheap shot Rich employs often if he can squirm it in against white conservatives in a way as to not to appear racist himself. Rich loves his gotcha moments as proof of his moral insight of all that is wrong about America, but Rich gets to his point in the last paragraph;
Anyone who does the math knows that America is on track to become a white-minority nation in three to four decades. Yet if there’s any coherent message to be gleaned from the hypocrisy whipped up by Hurricane Jeremiah, it’s that this nation’s perennially promised candid conversation on race has yet to begin.
Abolitionists, the Civil War, Eisenhower and all the people working to put race in its place, no place, have not been candid. Only Rich and his rich intellectual friends discussing "race", global warming and other priority issues in their limousine's and jets, just out of hearing of their chauffeurs, have been candid in their speech and actions, but they never seem to notice the elitist purple donkey in their midst. That would just ruin their pâté de foie gras. Talk about tragedy.

Lizard Head, With Class, States Democrat Fears
The Democrats wanted to use the race card to their advantage and it became the wild card that has gone out of control and they're worried. So worried they push out their favorite junk yard dog, Mister James Carville, to try and take Obama down because Obama hasn't been following the Democrat script of being the party of race not the party that elects race except where it benefits the Democrat Party.
"The Republicans will eat him alive" is what the Clinton campaign is telling the superdelegates. Hillary is the tougher of the two, the candidate you want on your side in a knife fight, a gender reversal that prompts Carville to indulge in some ribald humor: "If she gave him one of her cojones, they'd both have two."
Besides implying that the title Ms is a misnomer in this race, Carville implies that Obama can't go for the kill. Saying someone from Chicago can't kill is like saying someone from Las Vegas can't play poker. An anamoly for sure.
The race card for the Democrats has become the high card in their dead-man's hand and it may just kill them in this election. By not sticking to the script Obama has cornered the Clinton-Democrat Party. If Hillary gets the super delegate vote, the democrats could lose significant numbers of betrayed black voters causing them to lose the White House as well as down ticket. Can't we use the taxes used to support the left handed lesbian nun mother earth chorus for highways. That way you can make the gas tax suspension permanent, drill for some oil and build some refineries.

So What If Pulled Pork Is Not Halal?
At least here in America. Halal can mean lawful or actions permitted by Shariah law without punishment imposed on the doer in many matters. We are not the Middle East. The right question is, is Islam as practiced worldwide, halal? Is it halal to keep your daughters stupid, pregnant and subservient? Is it halal to murder oneself to murder innocents for a bribe of 72 virgins? Is it halal to use death, dismemberment, beatings, threats, public humiliation and other crimes against others that one disagrees with?
If these things are halal then the hell with halal.
I bring this up because I received a question from a very thoughtful person concerning shariah or sharia law and the taking of America by Islam as they appear to be doing in Europe and Asia.
I think that we too will crumble without hardly a blink...what do you think?

I do not believe we will.
I have lived and worked in DC, LA, NYC, Boston, Taos and other places and there is a difference in thinking among certain circles. I feel sorry for those that, as a friend quipped, have become so urbane that they are insane. That said, there are differences between Butte, Paducah and Billings as well. Unlike Europe and Asia, America is ployglot both literally and figuratively. We are a united people in a united state of steel workers, bankers, soldiers, ranchers and doctors, lawyers and such.
The urbane insane love to quip that our founding fathers were just a bunch of dead white guys, ie, all alike. How intellectually shallow. To understand our founders is to know just how different they were except in the vision and determination to build a better nation. Some were wealthy, some became wealthy, some lost their fortune and some died. To say that Jefferson, Adams, Burr, Hamilton, Madison and Franklin were all the same is not ignorance, it is stupidity because even a fourth grader has readily at hand descriptions of each. Their differences were wedded together, often not too prettily, to shape a nation. Yes, they were that important that you can still see their prints in the mold of each new generation of Americans.
It is not that Americans want to be a Washington or a Jefferson, nor do they want to be a John Wayne, George Washington Carver, Clara Barton or a Ronald Reagan, but they do want to emulate them in passion, excellence and devotion to principle.
Islam in America so far has only had to deal with lawmakers, philosophers and the media. They best watch out when they start running into the America that remembers what America is and will become. America's greatest strength is not just its people, but those people's belief in God, liberty and their neighbors. That America will not swear or violate as they kill those that would harm America and the American dream.
To travel America is to be awed. Its beauty alone staggers the mind. Its differences all wedded together, sometimes not so prettily, is what makes it strong and wildly brilliant. The human race shares basic needs and desires, but here in America, as those basic needs are daily met, Americans reach for the sky in little and big ways.
My son, three generations out of the coal mines grinding down hope, is wrestling with the question of becoming a doctor, an economist or a rally race car driver. My father died young just as all the males in his family before him even though he was the first to graduate from high school, college and medical school and married "up" to my mother whose fore bearers settled Jamestown, Richmond and numerous other towns and regions. I think my family special, but they are not unique.
They are American.
Islamofacists cannot possibly understand that which is why they will fail in their violent hope of the caliphate including America. How could their tribal tradition ever hope to understand a southern lady marrying a hard scrabble boy from the streets of Akron whose son married an Italian girl from New York whose godfather was a Brooklyn cop named Leo?
Jen, we must always keep up our guard, but Tehran will never play in Peoria. If they ever try to go off Broadway they'll find that my uncle, Old Zeth, can still nail them in the eye at 10 yards with tabaccy or 100 yards with a single shot. It would be no matter to him except he'd have to put down his book and his pulled pork sandwich to deal with any halal crap which would make him cantankerous. Trust me. No one wants to try to make him mad twice. I got the welts as reminders, but I also have the love, the wisdom and the patriotism handed down by a long line of Zeths. So do you and the majority of Americans.
