Thirdly, the IPCC’s very high climate sensitivity estimates depend upon the assumption that temperature feedbacks that cannot be either measured or distinguished from direct forcings will triple those forcings, whereas the remarkable homeostasis of temperatures over at least the last 64 million years suggests either that feedbacks are net-negative or that the feedback-amplification equation (taken from electronic circuitry) is inapplicable to the climate, in which event equilibrium warming at CO2 doubling will be 1 Celsius degree, which is harmless and beneficial, and 21st-century warming from this cause will be little more than half the equilibrium warming.

Fourthly, the peer-reviewed economic journals are near-unanimous in finding that the cost of attempting to prevent global warming will greatly exceed the cost of doing nothing now and instead adapting in a focused way to any climate-related damage that may occur as a result of future global warming. My own calculations indicate that the cost of action now is likely to exceed the cost of focused adaptation later by one or two orders of magnitude.

I am uneasy that you should have recommended what the University of Oregon’s press notice is said to describe as “treatment” for those with whom you disagree. In Europe, within living memory, there were two totalitarian regimes that subjected legitimate scientific dissenters to “treatment”. You will forgive me for saying that humanity should surely not sink to those cruel and fatal depths of government-mandated unreason ever again.

I hope you will be able either to assure me either that the report I have read is inaccurate or that you are withdrawing or at least amending the paper”

Professor Kari Norgaard, who is currently appearing at the ‘Planet Under Pressure’ conference in London, has presented a paperin which she argues that “cultural resistance” to accepting the premise that humans are responsible for climate change “must be recognized and treated” as an aberrant sociological behavior.

Norgaard equates skepticism of climate change alarmists – whose data is continually proven to be politicized, agenda driven and downright inaccurate – with racism, noting that overcoming such viewpoints poses a similar challenge “to racism or slavery in the U.S. South.”

Many believe that evil corporations are driving the skeptics, but have nothing to say about the $80 billion plus spent by the US government since just 1989 on global warming.

It's all in the left's playbook of tactics and strategy. That is a sad fact of modern politics and will become more so if progressives and socialists believe they are indeed successfully pushing their meme. This will be even more true if they can prevent the facts from becoming the basis of the story which is also sad because we don't know if George Zimmerman is guilty or not. Of course, to the left Zimmerman's innocence might just be collateral damage for their greater "good."

That's only the half of it when you take into account the foot soldiers who pepper blog comments, Facebook etc., with coordinated lies, spin and off topic comments meant to focus on their central memes and in LTTE in national as well as small town newspapers, Twitter and electronic forums.

Potemkin? Maybe ongoing Levittowns of faux fronts like so many sets in a movie and just as real populated with Penn, Clooney and Angelica Huston.

Which brings us to Climategate.  Climategate parts one and two are a series of leaked e-mails from arguably the most prominent researchers promoting the idea that humans are causing catastrophic global warming. The e-mails show the scientists involved to be violating their professional ethics with the result that climate science in particular and science as an institution more generally is brought into question. 

The first group of e-mails released in 2009 showed scientists attempting to suppress or alter inconvenient data, destroying raw data so that others would be unable to analyze it, using tricks to change reported outcomes, conspiring to avoid legally required disclosure of taxpayer-funded data, and trying to suppress dissent by undermining the peer review process.  On the latter point the researchers involved threatened to boycott and get editors fired at journals publishing findings questioning the urgency of the climate crisis. 

Climategate 2 is a second release of e-mails, in November 2011, from the same cabal of scientists exposed in Climategate 1.  There is little new to the revelations—just more hiding data, trying to figure out how to downplay dissent or have papers that would seem to undermine one part or another of anthropogenic global warming theory ignored or discredited. 

To be clear, these e-mails do not disprove that humans are causing potentially catastrophic global warming. Whether or not humans are or are not, in fact, causing or contributing to dangerous climate change, the only thing clear that emerges from the Climategate e-mails is that the scientists claiming that “the science is settled” and that there is “consensus” among scientists that humankind are acting as planet killers, can’t be trusted, nor can their research be pointed to as solid proof of anthropogenic global warming.

The term skeptic has historically been a badge of honor proudly worn by scientists as indicating their commitment to the idea that in the pursuit of truth, nothing is beyond question, every bit of knowledge is open to improvement and/or refutation as new evidence or better theories emerge.  However, in the topsy-turvy field of climate science, “skeptic” is a term of opprobrium and to be labeled a skeptic is akin to being a heretic in the Middle Ages – you may not be literally burned at the stake, but your reputation will be put to flames.  

The Climategate scientists continue to claim that the actions disclosed are not bad as they seem and that nothing contained in the e-mails is really important. But this is like the Wizard of Oz saying “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain,” when in fact the real action is going on behind the curtain. 

Of course, this “ignorant wingnut conspiracy theorist” is Dr. H. Sterling Burnett who specializes in Environmental Ethics. As such Dr. Burnett must be suffering from a personality disorder to demand the employment of ethics in science.

I wonder, if Dr. Burnett does not exhibit such hatred as the commenter quoted above exhibits to ideas such as a belief in God, will he be stripped of his title and expelled from science all together?  As political correctness is bureaucratic herding by its very nature Emerson's quote, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" comes to mind since it is foolishly consistent.

Those Republicans sure are mean, right? Obama is beside himself that all of the Republican candidates on the stage for the debate didn't stop all those mean Republicans because he has sooooo much respect for our soldiers.

I was at the debate, in the audience on the right hand side about halfway back (here's my tweet of the video screen that was right in front of us). The person who booed was just a few rows in front of us. The booing got an immediate and angry reaction from nearly everyone sitting around him, who hissed and shushed at him. Lots of loud gasps, "Shhhh!" "No!" "Shut up, you idiot!" etc.

Over the last week while in NY I had little time to watch the news except for on the run and in airports. It became apparent to me that the Tea Party, Republicans and conservatives had fallen fast into a vast canyon of despair of their own making. Each broadcast told of impending meltdowns, wavering support and Republican congressmen being pummeled by constituents. I was surprised there wasn't a list of suicides committed or pending.

A delightful, but delusional relative recounted with bated breath of her nemesis, Paul Ryan, being booed and attacked by angry constituents, especially older constituents. I was reminded of the violent outbursts and actions of "Pee Party" (as in Depends) over the last few years and how turn around is fair play. She had actually printed out articles for me! I listened earnestly as she quoted articles from AFSME, SEIU, the socialist Militant newspaper, Think Progress, Democratic Underground, the New York Times and many more.

It all reminded me of when I first became a researcher and found that all was not as the main street media said it was. In fact, that all wasn't really connected to reality because political agendas had become so ingrained in journalism that journalism was no longer a career that involved actual reporting. One angry man who once was the town crank became a movement. One child who had the bad luck to do what they knew they shouldn't became a cause célèbre. It reminded me of the misattributed quote (to Josef Stalin) that "Death of one man is a tragedy. Death of a million is a statistic." 


The meme has grown to a few paid thugs stationed at a few political events being held up as proof that the public is completing yet another 180 and now understand that progressive and foolhardy policy is actually what they want. It's deja vu all over again. Only without FDR, LBJ and WJC.

Chris Matthews' Tingles Turn To Spasms

It is always fun to watch Chris Matthews. Not informative, but fun. As in funny.

This morning's show was especially funny as Joe Klein, Nora O'Donnell, Kathleen Parker and John Heilmann all stepped on each other to stigmatize Republicans and conservatives as nutty fringe haters willingly fomenting violence and government take over.

Joe, fondly remembering his anti-war protest days, even had a napkin with his notes on the meaning of sedition. Yep, we're all seditious.

Nora batted her eyes and restated firmly that she had, first hand, seen something and whatever it was, well, it was wrong.

Kathleen just looked sad. Weary work, reporting on those probably nice people in the Tea Party movement, but just like the Republicans, they have to divest themselves of the nutty fringe.

John, well, he probably spewed more spittle than Rep. Cleaver claimed hit him. Through his shower of indignation he did manage to bring up Waco, Ruby Ridge and all the other indicators of the current demise of the Republic, by the nutty fringe, including the Tea Party and all because our president is an African American. Did he mention that he is our first African American president? Yes, he is our first African American president and the extreme right, especially the surge of militias, hate the "change" in America, as witnessed by the election of our first African American president.

How new and un-American to have extremists on the right scream, "take our country back!" through their hatred of our first African American president. How ugly it has become that these extremists, nervous over the color change of our leadership (did you know he is our first African American president?), calling for more true representation by our representatives. (Please refer back to Joe's, he actually looked it up and took notes on his napkin in the Green Room, definition of sedition.)

As I watched I wondered how myopic these people are. Even as Joe fondly remembered his anti-war protest days, he spoke of the danger of the current protesters. That would be right wing protesters, not those lovable flower children that burned the ROTC building on my college campus as part of the protest movement that Joe fondly remembers.

I never heard any of the panel mention the eco terrorists that purposely maim loggers, the anarchists that mindlessly destroy property as they riot over perceived wrongs wrought upon them by the ruling government and I never heard from the panel about the infiltrators that attempted make Tea Party members appear, thus support Matthews gang thesis, as extreme right wing nuts.

Nora did look cute as she sat there. She was probably was going over her notes in her head that there was something out there that was wrong about these people. She knew it when she saw it, if only she could remember what it was. Maybe it was a black man who should've felt uncomfortable being a Tea Party member. I mean, shouldn't he have?

Chris just urged them on as he spoke of Republicans urging on the hatred. He got so excited he kept stepping on the panel's best lines. Those tingles turned to spasms as he realized that he, Chris Matthews, had uncovered the new American tradgedy, hatred on the right!
