but when the government was forced to produce some probable cause they
dropped the NY criminal process and President Bush declared him an "Enemy
Combatant" and whisked him away to the Naval Brig in South Carolina, where he
was held in solitary confinement without access to legal counsel or the outside
world for 3 years.
Then, when it looked like the Supreme Court would rule
against the government (including Scalia, who, to his credit has ruled that the
government just can't lock up U.S. citizens willy-nilly) they "undeclared" him
"Enemy Combatant" and sent him to Florida to face these (previously unheard)
charges.

smoking violation, $500 to $1,000 for a second violation in a single year, and

Department would get the task of enforcing the law.

I know smoking is bad for one's health and I smoke. I also drive fast, eat what I like and drink, but the whole secondhand smoke danger is based on junk science.

Many people do not like the smell of cigarette smoke. With those people I sympathize because for years non-smokers had little option in public places to get away from cigarette smoke and this was wrong and unfair.

Today local, state and nations governments desperate to show their uncontained compassion enact overreaching laws that are unnecessary, wrong and based on crap science. Should the owner of a private enterprise be told that patrons are banned from smoking a legal product in their place of business? No. Should the owner of a private enterprise be allowed to ban smoking in their place of business? Absolutely.

The legislature here in Ohio working hand-in-hand with that great republican Bob Taft enacted a statewide ban on smoking in public places. My wife and I enjoyed going out to lunch and dinner, especially since our children were grown and we had a little extra money and time. Many times I would telephone my wife and ask her out for a drink before heading home for dinner. No more. You do the math, average 3 times a week that we would have a lunch together, a dinner out and stop for a drink or some combination. Now we stay home and have friends over, but for how much longer before our compassionate leaders step the ban up to include abodes such and such feet apart.

Now these people are going after soft drinks, how we cook our food, banning perfume and on and on. Maybe next they'll ban bowling in a bowling alley because the bowling balls are a potential danger. The good Lord knows they have denormalized religion.

One of my sisters, a professor, told me that she couldn't wait for tobacco products to be banned completely. When I agreed she was surprised. Her smug smile went away when I explained that when they tried that with booze our uncle made a fortune smuggling and selling booze which is how his children got to go to Princeton. All tuition prepaid.

Let's see, a small step van, 2 trips a week......

He is a human with his own set of values that George W. Bush trusted. As well, George W. Bush is human with his own set of values and Karl Rove trusted him. It has been a good relationship.

Carville is projecting falsely for his own perceived benefit.

Did Karl Rove lose a generation of Republicans? No, he didn't. No matter what the left believes, Karl Rove has never been that powerful.

Politics is the art of the possible. Therefore, the notion of the political

Second, the press likes to write these kinds of stories. Third, it provides the
losing party with an easy excuse. Fourth, it can provide the winning party with

In what seems certain to be the dumbest statement of the week, David
Corn of The Nation said on National Public Radio that, by leaving the White
House, Karl Rove was "cutting and running" on Iraq.

Cutting and running. Why are Democrats obsessed with it? Really. 35 plus years they have been hoping and saying it in various ways, but it always means one thing, American failure. Maybe Truman was their evolutionary Peter Principle ending point.

Karl Rove is off to make his fortune. Good luck to him. Just think how evil he can be without the spotlight on him. Hee hee.

I have no intention of ever voting Republican again but have lately
become interested in Dr. Paul and his calls to “freedom”.

It seemed as if a grass-roots frenzy came from his supporters
during the Iowa buy-off, and thus, his 9% showing appeared to undersell his
candidacy and those results have not been sufficiently explained?

Since then, I’ve noticed that Dr. Paul is seldom mentioned in the
mainstream media, not even in passing, which seemed strange at first; but upon
reflection, not unusual given that the mainstream media has long since been
bought and sold. But I’m curious about it.

I watched the candidates speak in Ames and felt the appeals to Patriotism by the “front-runners” were patronizing to the extreme and had a phoniness and apparent appeal to the same Republicans that elected Bush; but I learned a long time ago not to allow on a fascist
“Marine Mentality” to run life.

Since their own Revolution, the French have Championed the
qualities of “Liberty, Equality and fraternity” and probably see, more than any

Anti-Surgists Insurgents Still Make Provinces Dangerous

Though there has been an excess of attacks creating massive press coverage, the surge against the surge in Iraq appears to have failed, at least for now. Through attacks in major metropolitan areas such as LA, New York and especially Washington DC the rebels and their allies in the press had hoped to galvanize a majority of citizens to ignore reality and turn against further military involvement in Iraq. Even though the surge appears to have faltered, critics point to weak government progressiveness and an ineffectual political process by the American Congress as the likely culprit.

Despite critics, Congress went on a month long vacation after failing to reconcile partisan differences and to address the unwillingness of different factions to work together to form a functioning coalition that could drive the government to make some identifiable progress. Many Representatives of the far left coalition have stopped even appearing to work with Congressional leaders further opening a deep rift among anti-surge surgists pointing out that attacks against the administration have increased almost daily and the administration is unable to stop them pointing to a need for a new direction in Washington.

Leading anti-surge Democrat Rep. John Murtha of the Pennsylvania province has recommended that redeploying pro-surge surgists to a neutral corner could clear the way to “real political” progress in the fight. Anti-surge surgists point to the current administration’s continual need to address the realities of Iraq as proof that the surge has failed.

“The administration is aggressively engaged in shifting (public) attitudes. And our side has been less aggressive than it needs to be,” said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. “The administration has been making inroads on their Iraqi argument, particularly linking it to terrorism.”

Others in the anti-surge surge coalition have aggressively grasped for the gravitas needed to make failure a reality. Noting the public’s uneasiness with facts, Illinois province Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the anti-surge surge coalition, said Wednesday, “As our coalition show some progress, the government of this nation is moving in the opposite direction. This is really unsustainable with the American people.”

Many anti-surgists have pointed to the provinces, such as the uncontrollable corn-belt provinces, as dangerous and out of control. “We’ve failed miserably there. Those provinces are lost,” stated an anonymous aide, but they noted some success in urban areas such as Chicago, but admitting that Kansas City was lost, stating, “It will always be the wild west out there. What are you going to do?”

Michael Flourney, a former Pentagon defense strategist and now president of the Center for a New American Security, said that “The clock in Washington is running down pretty fast. There’s sort of a wall next March-April.” Bush recently extended tours of duty from 12 months to 15 months and the anti surge surgists were impotent to get a surge against the surge up and running.

Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute, a Virginia-based think tank that follows defense issues, cites “significant progress” on the pro-surge front noting that, “There’s a backlash” against the anti-surge surgists noting a lessening of attacks in the belt around Washington, DC.

“The problem is that nobody in the United States sees any significant progress on the political front. The factions in the government don’t seem to be able to get along. And that makes Congress wonder whether we’re making any real progress. Because, even with better security, the country can’t figure out how to take care of itself.”

Reports from the capitol and from various provinces, including Massachusetts, California and Oregon have shown that anti-surge surgists and allied insurgents plan a “long hot August” culminating in massive attacks prior to General Petraeus’ testimony concerning the surge. A spokesperson for a small but violent group named Surge Haters In Texas, stated “Patraeus is a lackey for the administration and they have gone to great lengths to kill Iraqi freedom fighters just to make this surge look successful. We’re not buying that shit.”

Why Conservatives Are Better

The liberals like to talk about social conservatives and how “out of touch” they are. Well, liberals love social issues. They love abortion, multiculturalism, class warfare, racial leniency, educational indoctrination, income redistribution and many others.

What liberals do not like are the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of law and the sanctity of individualism. In short, what it means to be an American.

Since I seem to be into lists this week, and I know all of you are as well, I have put together a list of what I am looking for in my next President and the Republican Party and what they represent and believe.

The United States first and foremost as a sovereign nation.

Balanced Budget

Reduced size and scope of government

Lower tax rates

Less regulation

Earmark transparency

Corruption rooted out and punished

Win the War on Terror including Iraq and Afghanistan

Immediate end to multiculturalism

Sealed borders

Illegal aliens and those that support them aggressively punished

Education control back in the hands of local communities

Get government out of healthcare, medicine and pharmaceuticals

Campaign Finance Reform reformed out of law

Federal and state bureaucrats found to be undermining elected officials fired

All amendments recognized, especially the 2nd and 10th

Privatize Social Security

Sanctity of marriage

No federal law regarding abortion

Smash the false “wall of separation” restricting the freedom of religion

Full sentences in criminal cases to be fulfilled as working prisoners

Oh, and free transportation for liberals to Canada and all illegal aliens elsewhere

That covers most of it I think, at least for now.

The least government is the best government.

Malveaux, Are You Stupid Enough?

CNN White House correspondent Suzanne Malveaux pinned back the former First
Lady to explain how she could "sustain black support " while running against an
African-American. Ironically, thanks to Sen. Barack Obama's mixed white and
Kenyan parentage and campaign mischief, it is he who usually gets to field the
"black enough" question.

So, are any of the Democrat candidates "black enough", since hoaxer Al Sharpton isn't in the race?

Clinton said the problem is not a "moral crisis but an economic crisis,"
rejecting the "broad-brush" notion that paints the young black male "as a
threat, as a headache or as a lost cause. I reject it as a string of
disappointments, failures and casualties of a broken system. That's not who they
are and that's not who they can be."

That broad-brush of actual crime statistics tells us that families aren't broken, just their bank accounts. Where the hell do the rest of us get in on this broad-brush?

"We have to keep talking about race," she said, "because race is a very
significant issue for our country, for who we are as a country, for our role in
the world."

Well, as long as Democrats want to have any relevancy they have to keep talking about it, otherwise hoaxer Jessie Jackson is just another wannabe third world leader, not a premier American racist.

"I am really thrilled to be running at a time in our history when, on a
stage, you can see an African-American man, a Hispanic man and a woman."

There's a woman up there? Point her out.

In a moment of levity with the black columnists, Clinton joked about
how, as a flat-toned midwesterner, she sometimes lapses into a drawl in the
South and tends to drop her "g's" more around black audiences. In a snide
reference to author Toni Morrison's comment that her husband was the "first
black president," she mused:

"I do find myself dropping g's. I lived all those years in Arkansas,
and, you know, I'm in this interracial marriage."

Yep, going to Wellesley and Yale will do that to a person. All those pesky g's in Othello made for heavy sloughing as one wrestles with reading about interracial marry, but at least she can count on Bill to stay the coarse.

Sigh, it's not like we don't have enough time to find out if Clinton and the others are American enough, color blind enough, sensible enough, etc., but we probably won't because reporters like Malveaux aren't gutsy enough to ask these questions. They're afraid of being ostracized or fired.

My Friday Blues Were Fun

Last evening the wife and I listened to the presents she “bought” me. Earlier in the day I had met a business partner of mine in Columbus. After the meeting, realizing I was in a metropolitan area, I searched out the nearest Barnes and Noble with the gift card my wife had given me in hand. Eagerly, I searched “History”, “Biography” and “Politics”. How appalling. “Politics”, bash Bush. “Biography”, Bush is a moron. “History”, future generations have already condemned Bush as the worst President in history.

I chose David McCullough’s “1776” and Walter Isaacson’s “Benjamin Franklin”. I am excited, but I have money left on the card and some “lady” is eying me a little too closely. I’m no rocket scientist, but if a “lady” is eying me, she is no lady.

Handily, this excuse made me to run to the music section of the store. Once there I made a beeline for the Blues Section. Heaven.

I held an exact album cover copy in a jewel case of THE man.

He was born in Mississippi. He was a draft resister in WWII, but also a monster of a man who won a Golden Gloves heavy weight championship in 1936 and played bass riffs as if God Himself was plucking the strings. He wrote music and lyrics, produced records and also sang.

This man influenced all music that followed. The Stones, Doors, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton all did covers of his tunes. More importantly, so did the Yard birds, Koko Taylor, The Kinks, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers, Captain Beefheart, King Biscuit Boy, Shadows of Knight, Jimmy Witherspoon, Etta James, Long John Baldry, Sam Cooke, Big Mama Thornton, Paul Butterfield, Little Walter, The Spencer Davis Group, Mose Allison, Buddy Guy, Savoy Brown, and the great Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn. This is just a small sampling of those that gave him credit for his work. Basically, all of modern rock and blues ripped him off shamelessly.

During the Vietnam War we spread vitriolic stories around the world,
pretending that America's presidents sent Genghis Khan-style barbarian soldiers to Vietnam who raped at random, taped electrical wires to human genitals, cut off limbs, blew up bodies and razed entire villages. Those weren't facts. They were our tales, but some seven million Americans ended up being convinced their own president, not communism, was the enemy. As Yuri Andropov, who conceived this dezinformatsiya war against the U.S., used to tell me, people are more willing to believe smut than holiness.

The final goal of our anti-American offensive was to discourage the
U.S. from protecting the world against communist terrorism and expansion. Sadly, we succeeded. After U.S. forces precipitously pulled out of Vietnam, the
victorious communists massacred some two million people in Vietnam, Laos and
Cambodia. Another million tried to escape, but many died in the attempt. This
tragedy also created a credibility gap between America and the rest of the
world, damaged the cohesion of American foreign policy, and poisoned domestic
debate in the U.S.

Unfortunately, partisans today have taken a page from the old Soviet
playbook. At the 2004 Democratic National Convention, for example, Bush critics
continued our mud-slinging at America's commander in chief. One speaker, Martin
O'Malley, now governor of Maryland, had earlier in the summer stated he was more worried about the actions of the Bush administration than about al Qaeda. On another occasion, retired four-star general Wesley Clark gave Michael Moore a platform to denounce the American commander in chief as a "deserter." And
visitors to the national chairman of the Democratic Party had to step across a
doormat depicting the American president surrounded by the words, "Give Bush the Boot."

WINTER SOLDIER INVESTIGATION

honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war
crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed
on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of

ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot
at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

We call this investigation the "Winter Soldier Investigation." The term "Winter Soldier" is a play on words of Thomas Paine in 1776 when he spoke of the Sunshine Patriot and summertime soldiers who deserted at Valley Forge because the going was rough.

We who have come here to Washington have come here because we feel
we have to be winter soldiers now. We could come back to this country; we could
be quiet; we could hold our silence; we could not tell what went on in Vietnam,
but we feel because of what threatens this country, the fact that the crimes
threaten it, not reds, and not redcoats but the crimes which we are committing
that threaten it, that we have to speak out.

Is it a coincidence that the left of the 60-70s to now have used the same words, as if scripted, to tear down the United States of America.

And then there is the concept that our mayor is spending tax dollars to
evaluate local businesses. To further add insult to injury, he publicly chastizes them because they don't 'measure up.' If I were a prospective visitor who'd just read this article, I'd be looking for a hotel in Perrysburg, as the mayor certainly didn't cast our hotels in a positive light.

I can't help but wonder - after he's finished with the hotels, what
will be next? Will he turn his attention to local restaurants? retail outlets?
movie theaters?

Perhaps everyone would be better served if he turned those secret
shoppers on the city departments and agencies...especially since he has direct
authority over those entities - and that's what he was elected to do.

I think this is a great civic idea. The Mayor doesn't seem to listen to the citizenry. Maybe he'll listen to his own "truth squad". Did he say anything about "The Kaptur Inn"? I must have missed that.

generally agreed the United States must remain in Iraq as part of the war on
terror.

Declaring a new direction in energy policy, the House on Saturday approved $16 billion in taxes on oil companies, while providing billions of dollars in tax breaks and incentives for renewable energy and conservation
efforts.


Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to
produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal. One GOP
lawmaker bemoaned "the pure venom ... against the oil and gas industry."

The House passed the tax provisions by a vote of 221-189. Earlier it
had approved, 241-172, a companion energy package aimed at
boosting energy efficiency and expanding use of biofuels, wind power and
other renewable energy sources.

"We are turning to the future," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Yep, Nancy, we are headed in a new direction and it has little to do with energy policy except for you to pander to the enviro wackos for their votes. As usual, Congressional liberals don't really want to look at the effects of their policies such as bio and the rising cost of food in the wake of their feel good legislation.

Result, higher food prices, higher gas prices including home heating fuel and more taxes to the government and less money to actually solve problems that we, as a nation, face.

The right direction would be more domestic drilling and the building of more refineries, Congress won't accept that.

7 Arrested in Death of Oakland Newspaper Editor

A day after a prominent newspaper editor was shot to death downtown,
the police here on Friday arrested seven men and seized several weapons that
they suspected were used in his killing and those of two other
men.

Oakland police officials said they suspected that the men were part of a group operating “a very violent criminal enterprise” out of a neighborhood bakery.

The arrests came after a predawn raid by SWAT teams at the bakery,
the Your Black Muslim Bakery, and three bakery-owned properties, where the
police found several firearms, including the gun they believe was used to kill
the editor, Chauncey Bailey, of the weekly Oakland Post.

Mr. Bailey, 57, was shot several times at close range on Thursday
morning at a busy intersection near the Alameda County courthouse here. He had
been working on an article for the newspaper about possible links between the
bakery and several killings in the area, said Walter Riley, a lawyer for the
newspaper’s publisher, Paul Cobb.

young man in uniform stood up to argue that the surge was working, and cutting
down on Iraqi casualties. The moderator largely freaked out. When other members of the panel tried to answer his question, he demanded they "stand down." He demanded the questioner give his name, the name of his commander, and the name of his unit. And then he closed the panel, no answer offered or allowed, and stalked off the stage,

Wes Clark took the mic and tried to explain what had just occurred:
The argument appears to be that you're not allowed to participate in politics
while wearing a uniform, or at least that you shouldn't, and that the questioner
was engaging in a sort of moral blackmail, not to mention a violation of the
rules, by doing so. Knowing fairly little about the army, I can't speak to any
of that. But it was an uncomfortable few moments, and seemed fairly contrary to
the spirit of the panel to roar down the member of the military who tried to
speak with a contrary voice.

Liberals respond with their usual aplomb.

You think we should get out Iraq? Be a Democrat.


You think Iraq strategically and tactically is important to the War on Terror, be a Republican.


You think open borders is the correct way to go? Be a Democrat.

Pick any of your issues and think about it.


I am so tired of people that state, "both parties suck", or "I'm independent. I vote for the candidate". BS, you're either part of the solution or you are part of the problem. Fence sitting is worse. A political party reflects those that vote for and those that are active in the party. This is true at the national and state level as well as at the local level. The local level is the beginning or training ground for politicians seeking higher office thus very important.


Independents, like the Green Party and others, dilute the direction of the elected. Ask the Democrats about Nader and ask the Republicans about Perot. These two examples selfishly and arrogantly thwarted the will of the majority, thus the will of the nation.


If you don't like the direction your party is taking, get off your butt and get involved. To say that neither party represents you is disingenuous. Either you are looking for the perfect match or you are looking to avoid a commitment. If you won't get involved then you are just whining and the rest of us do not want to hear it.


Fence sitters and independents enable big government liberals to grow government in terms of size, budget, regulations and laws that strangle the citizenry and business by not being organized to stop them. Many independents also vote for the candidate that will give them the biggest share at the public trough. These are the lowest of the low in my opinion.

Our traditional one man, one vote and the two party system made us strong. All those that say we need a third party do not appear to know history. Those that say they're all crooks and liars do not stop and reflect that our elected officials reflect us as our choice. To all those crooks and liars shouting they're all crooks and liars, you are one in the same.

I am a conservative, but I don't need a Conservative Party because that would dilute my vote. I vote with Republicans because they reflect my hopes, desires and values far more than the Democratic Party.

A Wonderful Memory, Jong Mea

Jong Mea Restaurant

I was actually looking for a photograph of the old Jong Mea restaurant when I came across Lani's blog where she discusses her family and the Jong Mea. I did not know they also had restaurants in Mansfield and Indianapolis.

The Jong Mea was a traditional Cantonese restaurant when my parents took us there. The Won Ton soup was unbelievable, not like the watery bowl with a couple of soggy dumplings that seems to be the norm now. Jong Mea's Won Ton soup had a variety of vegetables, pork strips and delicate, but firm dumplings. Add their spare ribs and a platter of Shrimp in Lobster Sauce or Moo Gai Pan or Pork Egg Fu Yung and you're talking dinner. Dinner with authentic ingredients. And really nice people. Most restaurants didn't care for a family of eight, plus friends, walking in. The Jong Mea welcomed us as family. My fathers 2nd "father", Papa Presutti and his wife Mama (it wasn't until years later I realized their real names were Salvatore and Rosa), owners of Presutti's Villa on West 5th, once went to the Jong Mea with us. The meeting of Italian and Chinese made an evening of eating that was unbelievable.

Top it all off with an almond cookie that smelled of almonds before it even reached the table and a small bowl of sherbert.

To find such a Chinese restaurant today in Columbus would be wonderful.

UPDATE: I believe I was wrong when I said "Mr. Lee". Upon reflection, it was Mr. Look. Spelling correct? I hope so, because Mr. Look and Mr. Chin were, when I was young, elderly men who maintained their honor and dignity and I was lucky enough to have parents that allowed them to point out when I was out of line. They were men to be respected. I can still taste the smell and the food.

1. I played drums for a couple of bands that toured as an opening act for name bands. One day I woke up, sold my drums and went west to fight fires. My friends, fellow band members and later, after hearing tapes, my children were mystified why I didn’t make music a career. When I explained to my family that it would have been hard to have and raise children from a morgue I think they understood.

2. I heard Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan speak when I was twelve. That year I also fell in love with art and architecture as I carried nails and boards for older men building a church. It was a very important year.

3. At 15 years of age I was 12 feet tall and bullet proof and my father was small and stupid. Nine days before his birthday and 40 days before my 16th birthday he died and I found that I had had my facts exactly opposite.

4. I spent one of my birthdays with the Rolling Stones in Manhattan and Key West as an apprentice to a photographer who was shooting the images for their Black and Blue album.

5. My two best friends are almost to the left of Trotsky, but I love them like brothers.

6. I am momma’s boy. She was a beautiful and smart southern lady and my father knew it the day he met her and asked her to marry him. I once made the mistake of uttering a vulgarity in front of her. I miss her everyday.

7. I love NASCAR and everything that goes fast, but own and drive a Jeep.

8. I love pretty much all music, especially Willie Dixon and Dvořák, but at the moment I am bouncing back and forth between The Memphis Horns and Debussy when I drive my Jeep. My wife drives an A-4 slowly and tortures me by playing the Bee Gees on our long trips to the Eastern Shore. And smiles about it.
