With the district in a financial crisis and hundreds of its members facing layoffs, the Milwaukee teachers union is taking a peculiar stand: fighting to get its taxpayer-funded Viagra back.

And it appears that these teachers really (really, really) need them some Viagra.

Board and union negotiators reached a deal in 2002 to cover six tablets per month for erectile dysfunction drugs in health plans that insure 10,000 employees, dependents and retirees. They quickly became popular.

By 2004, the number of claimants receiving prescriptions skyrocketed to more than 1,000 per year, costing the district $207,000. During negotiations in 2005, the board proposed eliminating the benefit and an arbitrator adopted the plan.

It's a wonder they have the time and the energy to teach. OTOH, may 'splain some of those test scores since the teachers are getting scores on their own.

While I have no problem asking for money to support these efforts, I’ve always been very bashful about asking for anything for myself. However, I feel like I must humble myself and ask for help on my own behalf in this instance.

In September, my kids brought home a note from their school stating that the school would transition to uniforms beginning in January — midway through the school year. Naturally, this concerned me as the cost for each kid (I have two who would be affected) would be at least $400. A note home to parents assured us that the principal would entertain concerns during the upcoming “uniform fashion show.” However, the principal ended that meeting without answering a question, even though numerous hands were up. After that meeting, I organized parents with concerns and began a letter-writing and phone-calling campaign to members of the school board and media. We succeeded in getting the uniform issue tabled until next year. But parents still weren’t given a voice about whether we even wanted uniforms.

Instead of deal with me and other parents who disagreed with her new policy, the school’s principal began contacting the Army with fictitious complaints that I had threatened her. She pointed to posts on my personal blog about her behavior at the meeting as proof. However, after being referred to military investigators, they concluded that I had never issued any threats through email, blog or otherwise. I collected letters from other parents attesting to my behavior at the meeting.

Unfortunately, the Army took what the principal was saying at face value and formally counseled me. Suddenly, I was a trouble maker after 15 years of honorable service. The Army practically forced me to shut down my blog, though the decision was mine alone and no orders were given to do it.

At a PTA meeting a few weeks later, I again tried to present a motion to discuss the school uniform issue with the members of the association. It was shot down by the principal and the PTA president. I was harassed the entire evening by school security officials. Thankfully, I decided it would be prudent to record that meeting. When school officials again began contacting the Army about my supposedly threatening and disrespectful behavior at the meeting, I published the video on my blog to clear my name. This didn’t sit well with school officials and only emboldened them to step up their claims and use the military to force me to take down the videos — the only piece of evidence I had to prove my innocence.

The principal even used my PTSD to try and bolster her claims that I was a dangerous menace to her and her goals.

Because of these actions, I am pursuing a lawsuit to clear my name and force the school system to admit they overstepped their bounds by denying my right to participate in my children’s education and attempt to ruin my career. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to tackle this sort of lawsuit on my own. Because of this situation, my wife and I felt the need to relocate our kids after being singled out on more than one occasion by teachers and school staff. We took our kids to live with their grandparents until my orders allowed me to relocate in December. That trip cost us over $1,400, plus another $1,500 in maintenance on our elderly van, which completely wiped out our savings.

So, I’m asking if you’ll help me. I need to raise $7,000 just to pay for the retainer and initial filing of the lawsuit.

I am reaching out through various avenues to help raise the money. I’ve enlisted the help of local media, talk shows and blogs to help me raise the money. Fellow milbloggers are reaching into their pockets and tapping their readers as well. My neighbors and local Huntsville citizens are donating to a local fund at a bank where I’m stationed.

In one week, I move to Fort Hood for the next stage of my military service. I need to at least have the retainer and initial fees raised before I leave. Anything you can do is much appreciated no matter how small.

Obama is off to a great start according the Communist Party USA (CPUSA).

Given this situation, the Obama administration faces daunting challenges. Nevertheless, the new President, in my view, is off to a quick start. In less than two weeks he has:

Issued an order to close Guantanamo prison and end torture - a practice that stains our image, violates our constitution, and endangers our troops in the field.

Signed the Lilly Ledbetter bill that would give much greater scope to workers’ discrimination claims as well as a bill that would extend health care to millions of children.

Released funds to clinics that serve women’s heath care needs in developing countries.

Expressed support for higher fuel efficiency standards for motor vehicles—something the United Autoworkers Union (UAW) also supports.

Opened up a greatly needed dialogue with the Muslim and Arab world.

Dispatched George Mitchell to the Middle East in hopes of mediating the Palestinian-Israeli conflict—a conflict that cannot be solved by military means, but only by negotiation between the Israeli government and the representatives of the Palestinian people with aim of establishing an independent and viable Palestinian state and the right of both states live peacefully and within secure borders.

The President met with military generals to map out a withdrawal plan for Iraq.

And Obama has so much more goody goodness already in the works for us.

If this is the case, the Obama administration and the broad coalition that supports him will almost inevitably have to consider—and they already are—the following measures:

Public ownership of the financial system and the elimination of the shadow banking system and exotic derivatives.

Public control of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Counter-crisis spending of a bigger size and scope to invigorate and sustain a full recovery and meet human needs—something that the New Deal never accomplished.

Strengthening of union rights in order to rebalance the power between labor and capital in the economic and political arenas.

Trade agreements that have at their core the protection and advancement of international working-class interests.

Equality in conditions of life for racial minorities and women.

Democratic public takeover of the energy complex as well as a readiness to consider the takeover of other basic industries whose future is problematic in private hands.

Turning education, childcare, and healthcare into “no profit” zones.

Rerouting investment capital from unproductive investment (military, finance and so forth) to productive investment in a green economy and public infrastructure.

Changing direction of our nation’s foreign policy toward cooperation, disarmament, and diplomacy. We can’t have threats, guns and military occupations on the one hand and butter, democracy, goodwill, and peace on the other.

Full-scale assault on global warming.

Serious and sustained commitment to assisting the developing countries, which are locked in poverty and misery.

Just to make their marching orders clear to Obama the CPUSA wrapped up with this:

Staring us in the face are some immediate challenges
First, we have to support the passage of the President's stimulus bill in the Senate.

Second, we have to block any Republican efforts to derail the nomination of Hilda Solis, the nominee for the Secretary of Labor. This is the first round in the battle to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, which will dramatically expand the right to join a union in this country. Some may think this is a struggle of only the labor movement. But nothing could be further from the truth. A bigger labor movement in this country would strengthen the struggle on every front. No one expressed this point better than Martin Luther King toward the end of his life.

Third, we have to join others in resisting evictions and foreclosures—not to mention cutbacks and layoffs at the state and city level.

Fourth, the wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan have to be brought to a close. As former President Lyndon Johnson realized too late, wars of occupation (in his case, Vietnam) can quickly ruin a presidency that has great promise.

In any case, we have our work cut out for us. But I think we can confidently say that change is coming. And we will build a more perfect union.

Yes, we can.

Why would a group such as CPUSA or individuals around the country believe for a second that Socialism, National Socialism and Communism will work in this country when it has failed every where it has ever been tried? For power. That power always used unions as the sledge hammer to beat citizens into line.

Most of the time, that failure included the murder and death of tens of millions, the poverty of hundreds of millions, but most importantly of all, the poverty of the soul of all that led, joined or that were subjugated.

Welcome to the Obama future if you aren't ready to fight it.

Sheila Patterson: 'Not Like Us' Get Out Of Our School

Maybe it was the heady notion that those of a different color would finally be put in their place. Maybe it was just the pure arrogance of one finally feeling empowered. Probably it was a typical school board member shoving their beliefs down the throats of those that disagree.

Whatever it is, Sheila Patterson doesn't understand democracy as practiced in our Republic. She also slapped her new president in the face with her directive to those that disagree with her.

I am just very very disappointed.

Jackson Public Schools board member to teachers who did not show inauguration: Go home
Jackson Public Schools board member Sheila Patterson had a strong message Tuesday for some teachers who did not "feel it was important" to show the inauguration of President Barack Obama during class.

"They don't belong in this school district -- not the type of district we have here," Patterson said at Tuesday's board meeting.

Patterson was speaking of the 43 percent minority student population, and that the inauguration of the first black president was an historic event no matter what political viewpoint one has.

"I am just very very disappointed," she said.

An East Valley eighth-grader was suspended this week after he turned in homework with a sketch that school officials said resembled a gun and posed a threat to his classmates.

Allowing this behaivor could lead to dodgeball, dodgeball to playing army, playing army to kissing girls, kissing girls to sexual harrassment, sexual harrassment to rape, rape to Columbine.

There, nice and neat. Drawings is bad. They should have started killing an earlier Van Gogh. Then we could have nipped this all in the bud.
