Today is the anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
May this scourge never visit America again.
Among the stories, both true and untrue, that I have heard was one that goes directly to the sensitivity of the press in the Dan Rather sense that the story is not true, but speaks to the truth.
As the story goes, as Mrs Lincoln left Ford Theater a reporter started to ask a question when a guard heatedly announced that her husband had just been shot. The reporter, always on the beat, immediately asked, "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
