Wisconsin's Mickey Mouse Recall Effort Gets Setback

A judge ruled Thursday that the state Government Accountability Board needs to take more aggressive action to vet recall signatures that are expected to be submitted in two weeks against Gov. Scott Walker and other Republican office holders.


The ruling by Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis came in a case filed Dec. 15 by Walker's campaign committee and Stephan Thompson, executive director of the state Republican Party, asking Davis to order the accountability board to seek out and eliminate duplicate and fictitious signatures and illegible addresses in recall petitions.

There was no comment from Adolf Hitler or any other Nazi connected to the recall effort, but reportedly Minnie said Mickey is a loser.

Last week, I pointed out that in the ongoing effort to recall Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, any signature submitted to the state Government Accountability Board would be given the presumption of validity. Furthermore, the Board itself won’t be checking the veracity of signatures — they count until Scott Walker’s campaign challenges them.

This came to a head at a GAB meeting on Tuesday, when election officials admitted names like “Mickey Mouse” and “Adolph Hitler” would count toward the 540,000 signatures needed to force a recall election. That is, unless Walker’s volunteers can enter hundreds of thousands of signatures into a database and challenge the fraudulent ones within the ten-day window. (This, of course, assumes that Adolph Hitler is not actually alive, living in Wisconsin, and supporting the recall Walker effort. If he is, the state has a lot more to worry about than protecting union benefits.)
The Mickey Mouse and Hitler hypotheticals are ridiculous examples meant to demonstrate how screwed up the signature verification process is. But, in fact, it’s much worse than it seems. It’s not easily recognizable names like these that should concern Walker. He needs to worry about the fabricated names that don’t stand out, and therefore will be impossible to challenge in a timely manner.

Say, for instance, you’re an elderly volunteer scanning a list of recall signatures. You see the names “Wyatt Donnelly,” “Freddy Newandyke,” “Frances Buxton,” and “Emil Schuffhausen.”
Those names are, in order: The [y are in] in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. But unless Leonard Maltin is scanning those signature sheets on that day, all those names will count.

Also difficult to find will be the people who signed multiple recall petitions. Under the rules, someone can sign as many times as they want, but only one signature will count. It is then incumbent upon the recall target to sift through hundreds of thousands of signatures and challenge the duplicates. One guy boasted of signing up to 80 petitions — meaning, some campaign volunteer will have to play “find the other 79.”

And this is how the unions will attempt to unseat Gov. Scott Walker…

Personally, I think they should be arrested and charged with sedition.

It the mind of an ignorant wingnut conspiracy theorist, any level of denial and idiocy is possible.  These are the same people who believe in a magical being that rose from the dead and walked on water, yet are in denial of what our best science and military say is fact.

Which brings us to Climategate.  Climategate parts one and two are a series of leaked e-mails from arguably the most prominent researchers promoting the idea that humans are causing catastrophic global warming. The e-mails show the scientists involved to be violating their professional ethics with the result that climate science in particular and science as an institution more generally is brought into question. 

The first group of e-mails released in 2009 showed scientists attempting to suppress or alter inconvenient data, destroying raw data so that others would be unable to analyze it, using tricks to change reported outcomes, conspiring to avoid legally required disclosure of taxpayer-funded data, and trying to suppress dissent by undermining the peer review process.  On the latter point the researchers involved threatened to boycott and get editors fired at journals publishing findings questioning the urgency of the climate crisis. 

Climategate 2 is a second release of e-mails, in November 2011, from the same cabal of scientists exposed in Climategate 1.  There is little new to the revelations—just more hiding data, trying to figure out how to downplay dissent or have papers that would seem to undermine one part or another of anthropogenic global warming theory ignored or discredited. 

To be clear, these e-mails do not disprove that humans are causing potentially catastrophic global warming. Whether or not humans are or are not, in fact, causing or contributing to dangerous climate change, the only thing clear that emerges from the Climategate e-mails is that the scientists claiming that “the science is settled” and that there is “consensus” among scientists that humankind are acting as planet killers, can’t be trusted, nor can their research be pointed to as solid proof of anthropogenic global warming.

The term skeptic has historically been a badge of honor proudly worn by scientists as indicating their commitment to the idea that in the pursuit of truth, nothing is beyond question, every bit of knowledge is open to improvement and/or refutation as new evidence or better theories emerge.  However, in the topsy-turvy field of climate science, “skeptic” is a term of opprobrium and to be labeled a skeptic is akin to being a heretic in the Middle Ages – you may not be literally burned at the stake, but your reputation will be put to flames.  

The Climategate scientists continue to claim that the actions disclosed are not bad as they seem and that nothing contained in the e-mails is really important. But this is like the Wizard of Oz saying “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain,” when in fact the real action is going on behind the curtain. 

Of course, this “ignorant wingnut conspiracy theorist” is Dr. H. Sterling Burnett who specializes in Environmental Ethics. As such Dr. Burnett must be suffering from a personality disorder to demand the employment of ethics in science.

I wonder, if Dr. Burnett does not exhibit such hatred as the commenter quoted above exhibits to ideas such as a belief in God, will he be stripped of his title and expelled from science all together?  As political correctness is bureaucratic herding by its very nature Emerson's quote, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" comes to mind since it is foolishly consistent.

An Open Letter To The Pakistani People

To the Pakistani People,

You are angry over the death of your soldiers in an attack from NATO forces. We are angry that this occurred just as you are. Your forces called in an air strike and the mission went horribly wrong. The suffering of your people, the families of the dead and your nation is understandable. We mourn with you.

There is another facet of this story and it is simple. Your government knew bin Laden was living in Pakistan. Your government also harbors many other terrorists. Many of your citizens also sanction terrorists, terrorism and the mission to kill innocent people as well as those Americans fighting terrorism.

You cannot want peace and sanction murder. You cannot hate us and ignore the actions of your government and civil and religious leaders for they are involved in terrorism. Terrorism is murder.

If you want the killing to stop, stop sanctioning terrorism and the murderers involved in carrying out terrorist acts.

It is that simple. Stop supporting terrorism. Stop supporting murder.

If you do so, the killing will stop and peace and prosperity will come to Pakistan. If you do so, terrorists will know they are not welcome in your country. Until that time, stop blaming America for fighting those that want to kill Americans.

Your acceptance of terrorists and terrorism caused these deaths.

Accept that and you will start the stopping of tragedies such as this. If you do not move to stop the support of terrorists, murderers and terrorism then you will see more death.

Whoopi. We Have A Bonehead Presidential Expert!

I sure do hope no one will find me racist because I use "bonehead" and Whoopi Goldberg, presidential scholar, entertainer extraordinaire and professional whiner, in the same headline. For those who have never noticed, Ms Goldberg is African-American as she likes to point out.
